A ball detent is a fundamental mechanical arrangement that temporarily retains a moving item in a fixed position relative to another. The moving parts normally glide around each other or spin within each other.
The ball is a single, generally, metal sphere that glides within a bored cylinder under the pressure of a spring, which presses the ball against the detent, which can be the basic as a hole smaller than the ball's diameter. When the holes are well-aligned with the cylinder, spring pressure pushes the ball partially into the hole, holding the parts in place.
