The propeller shaft seals are well-made consist of a housing with O ring lip seals and face seals. The two most common types of seals are face seals and lip seals. As opposed to face seals, which use a collar fastened to the shaft that presses up against a surface on the articulated hose's end, both types use an articulated rubber sleeve to keep the water out. A small quantity of water forms on the contact between the stainless and the carbon, lubricating the seal.
