The name "trigger" was coined by Mercury Marine. This component positions beneath the flywheel. The mechanical advance of the trigger regulates the timing on an outboard boat motor.
The outboard trigger infuses the switch box when to "fire." Magnets pass near to the trigger coils on the inner ring of your flywheel. The trigger delivers a low voltage "signal" to the switch box every time the magnet passes. Thus, a defective trigger is a concern for many engines, including outboards. It causes a variety of issues when running the outboard.
