The stator is a wire coil housed inside the engine case. A magnet attached to a shaft spins within the stator, producing alternating current (AC). That current flows through the case on heavy gauge wire and into the rectifier/regulator, which converts it to DC power with a consistent output. When a stator fails, it is typically due to the degradation or aging of its insulation resulting from external occurrences and materials introduced into its system. The stator can be a difficult component to diagnose because there are numerous potential symptoms, all of which are also symptoms of other component failures. When you begin to experience problems, it is easy to become distracted and overlook the stator.
