A temperature gauge works by delivering a low amperage current through the gauge's meter to the ground through a variable resistance transmitting device. With variations in pressure, temperature, and so on, the resistance of the transmitting units increases or decreases. The amount of current permitted to flow through the sender to ground changes as its resistance changes, and the meter deflects, indicating the temperature.
