Gas-charged lift supports store energy by compressing gas inside a cylinder. The power is stored when the container is closed. When a hatch, hood, liftgate, or trunk is opened, the energy is released to raise the hatch, hood, and liftgate, safely holding it open. Gas-charged lift supports are sometimes mistaken for shock absorbers or struts, but they absorb energy to control motion. Because lift supports typically contain a gas charge of 1,500 psi, they cannot be pressed by hand. If the vehicle is five years old or older, it will need to be changed. There are two types of Lift Support applications: automotive-specific and universal applications.
