Oil seals keep dirt and other contaminants out of shafts and bearings while also keeping oil and grease in. An oil seal consists of an exterior circular metal component and an inside flexible element that does the actual sealing and is chemically linked to the metal portion. The sealing component is rubber, which can be synthetic or natural depending on the situation. The flexible member's sealing lip is prepared by cutting away the flash at the sealing edge during molding. A fine sealing edge applies adequate pressure to the shaft to prevent leakage. The introduction of dust and debris is one of the most common causes of oil seal failure. Even the slightest particles can cause a seal to break in high-pressure circumstances, allowing oil to seep and dirt to enter.
