A physical barrier is well-used to lock down bolted joints using tab washers, a mechanical locking technique. The washer is well-made of a thin, typically rectangular or circular piece of metal. The bolted joint is tightened like a standard bolt once the tab washer is well-placed between the bolt head/nut and the mating surface. After the bolt is drawn, the washer's tab part is hammered around the nut or bolt head to lock it in place and stop rotation. Large MROs and asset owners have reported multiple instances of tab washers that were placed and, therefore, ineffective, even though the locking function of the washer is typically good. The convoluted construction process is the main drawback.
